Safety
AVYRA is built around one idea: you should know who you are talking to. Everything below follows from that.
Everyone is verified
There are two ways onto AVYRA and both involve a check.
- A university email address. If your university's domain is one we have confirmed, clicking the link in your inbox verifies you immediately.
- A selfie. Everyone else takes a live photo, which a trained reviewer compares against the photos on the profile. No automated decision bans or approves anybody on its own.
The verified badge is not decoration. It means a person checked.
Reports reach a human, the same day
When you report somebody, a case is opened and a moderator picks it up. Serious reports — threats, anything involving a minor, anything sexual and non-consensual — go to the front of the queue automatically and cannot be closed without action.
You will not be asked to justify a report to the person you reported. They are never told who reported them.
Blocking is absolute
Block somebody and they disappear from your deck, you disappear from theirs, and any conversation between you closes. They are not notified. There is no way for them to find you again from within AVYRA.
Share My Date
Before you meet somebody, tell a friend. Share My Date sends a trusted contact where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be done, and checks in on you afterwards. If you do not respond to the check-in, your contact is told.
It works over SMS, so your friend does not need AVYRA installed.
What we will never do
- We will never show anybody your exact location. Distance is shown in bands, and your precise coordinates never leave our servers.
- We will never show your email address or phone number to another member.
- We will never post anything as you.
If you need help right now
These are Kenyan services and they are free to call.
- Police emergency — 999 or 112
- GBV and child protection helpline — 1195 (Healthcare Assistance Kenya, 24 hours)
- Childline Kenya — 116 (24 hours, free from any phone)
- Kenya Red Cross counselling — 1199
If you are in immediate danger, call 999 first. Report to us afterwards; we will still be here.
Reporting something to us
Use the report button on any profile or conversation, or email safety@avyra.co.ke. If it involves somebody under 18, say so — those reports are handled separately and immediately.
